Enshu-ryu

Japanese: 遠州流 - えんしゅうりゅう

The name of a school of tea ceremony and flower arranging. A luxurious and aesthetic school founded by Kobori Enshu in the early Edo period and popular with feudal lords. It was abolished in 1788 and later restored by Sochu (1886-1867). It is now divided into two schools, the Enshu school and the Kobori Enshu school, with several further branches. Ikebana dates back to the end of the 17th century, when Enshu school tea master Endo Genkan showed illustrations of early ikebana arrangements in his tea book, and in the mid-18th century, Shunjuken Ichiyo became active in ikebana. The name of the tea ceremony school was used as is. In the first half of the 19th century, with the technical inventions of Teishosai Yone Kazuma and Satomatsuan Kazutoshi, it shifted to a classical style and spread throughout the Kanto region.

茶道および生け花の流派名。江戸時代初期の小堀遠州を祖とする大名好みの豪華，唯美的な一流派。天明8 (1788) 年に改易になり，のちに宗中 (86～1867) が再興，現在は遠州流，小堀遠州流の2家に分れ，さらに数分派がある。生け花は 17世紀末に遠州流茶人遠藤元閑が，茶書中で生花初期形式の作品図を示し，18世紀中頃に春秋軒一葉が生花で活躍したのに始る。茶道の流名をそのまま流用。 19世紀前半に貞松斎米一馬や里松庵一寿らの技術的考案で古典的様式に転じ，関東一円に広まった。
