The Battle of Algiers

...The government of the Fourth Republic of France tried to suppress this by force. (2) From 1956, the FLN launched an urban guerilla campaign, known as the Battle of Algiers, and also strengthened its political activities at home and abroad. The French government dealt a blow to the FLN organizations in the cities by increasing its military power and indiscriminately suppressing the masses, but the guerilla soldiers in the countryside could not be destroyed, and the war became a quagmire.
