Japanese: オモダカ(沢瀉) - オモダカ（英語表記）arrowhead

A perennial herb of the Albusdaceae family (illustration) that grows in rice paddies, shallow ponds, and waterways. It produces underground runners that bear small corms at the end. The leaves are basal. The leaves of young plants are linear and submerged, but leaves that develop later have long stalks that stand upright and grow above the water surface. The leaf blade is arrowhead-shaped with two lobes at the base, and the terminal lobe is 7-15 cm long. From August to October, it produces upright flower stalks 20-80 cm tall, bearing whorls of three flowers. Large inflorescences form compound whorls. Male flowers are borne at the top of the inflorescence, and female flowers at the bottom.

水田や浅い池や水路にはえるオモダカ科の多年草（イラスト）。地下に走出枝を出し，その先に小さい球茎をつける。葉は根生する。幼植物の葉は線形で沈水性であるが，後にできる葉は長い柄があって直立し，水面より上に出る。葉身は基部が二つに裂けた矢じり形で，頂裂片は長さ7～15cm。8～10月に高さ20～80cmの直立する花茎を出し，3個ずつ花を輪生する。大きな花序では複輪生となる。花序の上部に雄花，下部に雌花をつける。
