Michio Shinjo

A scholar of Japanese classics in the late Edo period. Born into a merchant family in Fuchu, Suruga (Shizuoka Prefecture). His real surname was Fujiwara. He was commonly known by names such as Niuemon. His family name was Sankaiya. His pen name was Kayaen. From an early age, he studied under Nozawa Masaki, a disciple of the Hino school of waka poetry, and learned Chinese classics from Ueno Koryu and the head priest of Shoryu-in, and poetry and prose from Ishikawa Takayuki. He also listened to lectures by Miura Eiten and Ito Aishu, and studied astronomy and arithmetic from Saito Kuroemon, a mathematician of the Seki school, and waka poetry from Muramatsu Harue, a disciple of Motoori Norinaga. In 1811, he became a disciple of Hirata Atsutane, and also became a disciple of the kyoka poet Katobe Mago, and was given the name Seiwara Shinakawa. He was also a disciple of Motoori Shuntei and Ohira. Michio's academic career is detailed in his essay Kayaen Dogo. He participated in the compilation of the official geographical record "Suruga-shi" (1812), and later completed the 25 volumes of "Suruga no Kuni Shin Fudoki" (completed in 1834).

江戸後期の国学者。駿河(静岡県)府中の商家に生まれる。本姓藤原。通称仁右衛門など。屋号三階屋。号栢園。幼少から日野流歌学の門人野沢昌樹に入門して薫陶を受け,植野興竜,松竜院住職に漢籍を,石川敬之に詩文を学ぶ。三浦永年,伊東藍洲の講説も聞き,関流算学家斎藤九郎右衛門に天文算数を学び,さらに本居宣長の門人村松春枝に歌道を学んだ。文化8(1811)年,平田篤胤に入門,狂歌師鹿都部真顔門人ともなり,清藁科河の名をもらった。本居春庭,大平の門人でもある。道雄の学問的経歴は随筆『栢園独語』に自ら詳しく記している。官選地誌『駿河志』(1812)の編纂に参加し,のち『駿河国新風土記』25巻(1834年脱稿)を成立させた。
