In the field of art, Romanticism's representative Delacroix's "Women of Alger" (1834) and "Greece on the Ruins of Missolonghi" (1826) conveyed a passionate desire for the East, but neoclassical painters such as Ingres's "Grande Odalisque" (1814) attracted a wide range of interest, not just Romanticism. As the era went on, with the later generations of Chassériau, Fromentin, and Gérôme, it ended up merely satisfying eroticism and superficial curiosity, and gradually lost its freshness and power. ...
