A nuclear reactor designed to achieve a particularly high coolant outlet temperature (e.g., 700°C or higher) using the inert gas helium as the coolant. Graphite is used as the moderator. The fuel used is coated fuel particles, which are fine particles (200-800 μm in diameter) of oxides or carbides of U, Th, or Pu, called kernels, coated with multiple layers of pyrolytic carbon. There are two methods of core construction: one is to place these fuel particles in many holes in a prismatic graphite block with a hexagonal cross section to form a fuel body, and the other is to form a so-called pebble bed core, in which fuel spheres made by dispersing these fuel particles in a spherical graphite matrix are stacked in a graphite tank. …
