For example, in 1690, in Hirado-cho, one of the towns, a townsman who owned a place received an average share of 2 kan 062 momme of silver against an average share of 1 kan 090 momme of silver. In addition to this share of silver, each household who rented a house was given a small share of hearth silver, from which they paid taxes such as trash disposal fees and storage fees. This trade profit came from the customs trading revenues of the Nagasaki Magistrate and the City Hall and the Nagasaki Kaisho, which were under the jurisdiction of the Town Elders, who acted exclusively between the foreign side and mainland merchants. The population reached a peak of 64,523 in 1696, and then, reflecting the stagnation of trade, it was 41,553 in 1715 (Shotoku 5), and from 1771 (Meiwa 8) onwards, fluctuating slightly between 30,000 and 1780, when the Meiji Restoration came.
