Qianling

This is the joint tomb of the third Chinese Tang Dynasty Emperor, Lizhi (628-683), and his wife, Empress Wu Zetian (?-705). It is located in Liangshan, which rises north of Qian County, about 70 kilometers northwest of Xi'an. The tomb was built using a natural mountain, and there is a gate at the front, and on either side of the approach to the tomb are a Huabiao, a Pegasus, an ostrich, a stone horse, a stone man, a stone monument, a group of statues of the leaders of the various barbarians, and a stone lion. These stone carvings are truly imposing and magnificent, and well tell of the spirit of the era when the Tang Dynasty was full of prestige. Excavations at the auxiliary tombs are progressing steadily, and beautiful murals realistically depicting the lives of Tang Dynasty royalty and aristocrats have been discovered at the tombs of Li Xian, Li Chongrun, and Princess Yongtai.

中国、唐の第3代皇帝高宗李治(りち)（628―683）とその妃則天武后(そくてんぶこう)（？―705）の合葬墓。西安(せいあん／シーアン)の北西約70キロメートル、乾県の北にそびえる梁山(りょうざん)にある。自然の山を利用してつくられた陵だが、正面に門闕(もんけつ)があり、参道を挟んで、華表、天馬、駝鳥(だちょう)、石馬、石人、石碑、諸蕃(しょばん)君長の群像、石獅子(しし)などが並んでいる。これらの石造彫刻は実に堂々としており、華麗で唐帝国の威信に満ちた時代の風潮をよく物語っている。陪冢(ばいちょう)の発掘調査は着々と進められており、李賢墓、李重潤墓、永泰公主(えいたいこうしゅ)墓など、唐の王侯貴族の生活を写実的に描き出した美しい壁画が発見されている。
