Lake Furen

A brackish lagoon at the base of the Nemuro Peninsula in eastern Hokkaido. It has an area of ​​57.7 square kilometers, a circumference of 94 kilometers, and a maximum depth of 13 meters. A sand spit develops between the lake and the Sea of ​​Okhotsk (Nemuro Bay), and a 300-meter-long channel connects the lake to Nemuro Bay in the center of the spit. A mixed forest of Yezo spruce, Todo fir, and Mizunara oak can be seen on the sand spit. The Furen River, Yaushubetsu River, Bettoga River, and Attoko River flow into the lake, and Bettoga in Nemuro City on the south bank is a settlement of people who repatriated from the Kunashiri Island area after World War II, and inland fishing is carried out there. Every year from November to December before the lake freezes over, whooper swans fly in, and the surrounding area has been designated as the Notsuke-Furen Prefectural Natural Park. In 2005, Lake Furen, along with Shunkunitai, became a Ramsar Convention registered wetland.

北海道東部、根室(ねむろ)半島の基部にある汽水性の潟湖(せきこ)。面積57.7平方キロメートル、周囲94キロメートル、最大深度13メートル。湖とオホーツク海（根室湾）との間には砂嘴(さし)が発達し、砂嘴のほぼ中央の約300メートルの水道によって根室湾に通じている。砂嘴上には、エゾマツ、トドマツ、ミズナラなどの混合林がみられる。風蓮川、ヤウシュベツ川、別当賀(べっとうが)川、厚床(あっとこ)川などが流入し、南岸の根室市別当賀は、第二次世界大戦後、国後島(くなしりとう)方面から引き揚げた人々の入植地で、内水面漁業が行われている。毎年11月から12月にかけての結氷前にはオオハクチョウが飛来し、付近一帯は野付(のつけ)風蓮道立自然公園に指定されている。また、風蓮湖は春国岱(しゅんくにたい)とともに2005年（平成17）に、ラムサール条約登録湿地となった。
