A brackish lagoon at the base of the Nemuro Peninsula in eastern Hokkaido. It has an area of 57.7 square kilometers, a circumference of 94 kilometers, and a maximum depth of 13 meters. A sand spit develops between the lake and the Sea of Okhotsk (Nemuro Bay), and a 300-meter-long channel connects the lake to Nemuro Bay in the center of the spit. A mixed forest of Yezo spruce, Todo fir, and Mizunara oak can be seen on the sand spit. The Furen River, Yaushubetsu River, Bettoga River, and Attoko River flow into the lake, and Bettoga in Nemuro City on the south bank is a settlement of people who repatriated from the Kunashiri Island area after World War II, and inland fishing is carried out there. Every year from November to December before the lake freezes over, whooper swans fly in, and the surrounding area has been designated as the Notsuke-Furen Prefectural Natural Park. It is an island about 8 km long and 600 ha in area, and its sand dunes, wetlands, grasslands, and other areas are recognized as having scientifically valuable vegetation.
