A city in central Hokkaido. It was incorporated as a city in 1958. It developed as a mining town in the northern part of the Ishikari coalfield, centered around the Sorachi coal mine, but the last of the mines was closed in March 1995, and the population has declined significantly. As a measure to promote the coal mining area, factories such as those for leather, textiles, and imported plate glass were invited to the city. Area: 55.95 km2 . Population: 4,387 (2010). 北海道中部の市。1958年市制。空知炭鉱を中心とする石狩炭田北部の炭鉱都市として発展したが,1995年3月最後の空知炭鉱が閉山,人口減少が著しい。産炭地振興対策として,皮革や繊維,輸入板ガラスなどの工場が誘致された。55.95km2。4387人(2010)。
