Roughage - roughage

Japanese: 粗飼料 - そしりょう（英語表記）roughage

This refers to feed that is large in volume, contains a lot of crude fiber, and has little digestible nutrients. Broadly speaking, feed can be divided into those with low moisture content and high crude fiber content, and those with high moisture content. The former includes straw, husks, and hay, while the latter includes what are called succulent feeds, such as green grass, green crops, silage, and root vegetables. Although it has a lower nutrient content than concentrated feed, it is important as basic feed for herbivorous livestock, and since it is highly self-sufficient, the key to livestock management is to produce high-quality roughage efficiently.

飼料のうち，容積が大きく，粗繊維が多く含まれ，可消化養分の少いものをさす。大別すると，水分含量が少く粗繊維の含量が多いものと，水分含量の多いものに分けられ，前者にはわら類，殻類，干し草類など，後者には青草類，青刈り作物，サイレージ，根菜類などの多汁質飼料と呼ばれるものがある。濃厚飼料に比べると養分含量は少いが，草食家畜には基礎飼料として重要であり，また自給性が高いので，良質の粗飼料を合理的に生産することが畜産経営の鍵となる。
