〘Noun〙① A short dance performed in Kyogen. It is always accompanied by Kyogen songs (utai) and komai songs as the background, and has the independence to be performed on its own. It is more realistic and showy than Noh's shimai. Because it is a short dance, it was also performed as entertainment at banquets in the early modern period. Kyogen komai. *Toraakirahon Kyogen, Hinosake (late Muromachi period - early early modern period) "I will sing and show you how much I have practiced this komai." ② A type of dance that was popular during the early Kabuki period. At first it was similar in character to ①, but gradually as a Kabuki dance it developed in a different direction from Kyogen komai. In the Wakashu Kabuki period, "Komai Jūrokuban" was established as its basic form. *Hyōban, Shikidō Daikyō (1678), vol. 14 "The dancer keeps the rhythm with a drum and shamisen, performs a komai (ko-mahi) and sings."
