Katori Uohiko - Katori Nahiko

Japanese:
Katori Uohiko - Katori Nahiko

A Japanese scholar and poet of the mid-Edo period. Also called "Nabiko." Kajitori Uohiko was an elegant name, his real surname was Ino, and his given name was Kagetoyo, later Kageyoshi. He also went by the pen names Seiran and Chibuan. He was born on March 2, 8th year of the Kyoho era, in Sawara Village, Katori County, Shimousa Province (Sawara, Katori City, Chiba Prefecture). He lost his father at the age of 6 and was raised by his grandfather. He was known as a haiku poet in his youth, and through his interactions with Takebe Ayatari, he also became familiar with painting and kataka poetry. In 1760 (10th year of the Horeki era), he became a disciple of Kamo no Mabuchi, where he studied Japanese classics and waka poetry. In 1765 (2nd year of the Meiwa era), he handed over the family business to his son and moved to Edo, where he lived near Mabuchi. Although he started studying at a late age, he embodied Mabuchi's style of learning well, excelled in composing poems in the style of the Manyoshu, and is counted as one of the twelve great scholars of the prefectural school. After Mabuchi's death, many people in the Agatai school followed Uohiko, and in particular, he received the patronage of Lord Nakatsu of Buzen and his wife. In addition to academic books such as "Kogentei," "Nara no Tsumade," "Zokukanjiko," "Kanji Kakeo," and "Manyoshu Senka," he also wrote poetry collections such as "Kagotori Uohiko Kashu" (Prefectural School Posthumous Manuscripts Collection No. 4), "Ofuna Kajitori Miscellaneous Collection," and poetry and prose collection "Kagotori Uohiko Iko" (Katori Four Family Collection). He died on March 23, 1772.
