Japanese: アメリカオオサンショウウオ（英語表記）Cryptobranchus alleghaniensis; hellbender

Order: Hynobiidae, Family: Hynobiidae. Appearance is similar to the Japanese and Chinese giant salamanders, but even as adults they retain gill slits and have many bones inside them. These characteristics indicate that they retain more juvenile characteristics than their Asian counterparts. Their bodies are slightly smaller than the Asian species, with few exceeding 70 cm in total length. They are found in the eastern United States, and live in large rivers with relatively fast currents. They are aquatic throughout their lives.
