The Story of Shotetsu

Japanese:
The Story of Shotetsu

This is a book on the theory of waka poetry written by the poet Shochu, a monk of the early Muromachi period. It is written in two volumes. Some extant versions distinguish between the first volume as "Tetsu Shoki Monogatari" and the second volume as "Seigan Sawa". There are two theories about its creation: 1448 (Bun'an 5) and 1450 (Houtoku 2). The contents are wide-ranging, including anecdotes about poets, knowledge of waka poetry, ideal style, and Shochu's own annotations of waka poetry, making it an important book for understanding Shochu's theory of waka poetry. It is well-known that at the beginning of the book, he declares his admiration for Teika, saying, "Those who criticize Teika in the art of waka poetry should not be given any blessings, but should be punished." In terms of style, he idealizes a fantastical poem that is seductive and mysterious. The theory of yugen in this work was influenced by such forgeries as "Gubisho" and "Sangoki," which were attributed to Teika.
