...At the end of the 17th century, the island gained a certain degree of prosperity through the cultivation of cocoa and tobacco, and in the 18th century the French began cultivating sugar cane, with the first sugar factory being built in 1787. In 1802, it became a British territory under the Treaty of Amiens. Tobago was also discovered by Columbus in 1498 and became a Spanish territory, but was occupied by the Dutch in 1632, and was under French control from 1781 to 1802, and British control in 1763 and 1793.
