Original title: "Sumer is icumen in (Summer has come)". A type of canon called a rota (also called the Reading Rota), said to have been created around 1250 (some say 1310) at Reading Abbey in England. It has six voices, and takes the form of a double canon, with the upper four voices and the lower two voices (pes) each forming a separate canon. Due to its bright and beautiful sound and intricate structure, it is often called "a miracle in the history of music." Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
