Critic, English literature scholar, novelist. His father was Prime Minister Yoshida Shigeru. Born in Tokyo. He followed his father, a diplomat, around the world and dropped out of Cambridge University. After returning to Japan, he began his literary career by translating works such as Poe's Memoirs (1935), Valéry's Politics of the Mind (1939), and On Degas (1940), as well as introducing foreign literature. In 1939 (Showa 14), he founded the magazine Criticism with Nakamura Mitsuo and others, and wrote his first literary critique. His first collection of essays was British Literature (1949), followed by Shakespeare (1952), East and West Literature (1955), and An Introduction to Literature (1960). His consistent literary philosophy was a rejection of the autobiographical nature that dominated modern Japanese literature, and he placed the fundamental condition of literature on captivating readers with words, without making any distinction between so-called popular fiction and pure literature. His other works include fantastic collections of works that are unclear as either novels or essays, such as "Banquet" (1957) and "Afterglow" (1963), as well as collections of essays written in his own unique style, such as "The Beggar Prince" (1956), "Sweet and Sour Taste" (1957), and "Tastes Here and There" (1958).
