A bay of about 80 km north to south and 20 km east to west, surrounded by the Osumi and Satsuma peninsulas in Kagoshima Prefecture. It is also called Kinko Bay. Sakurajima is located near the inner part of the bay. The water is about 100 meters deep at the mouth of the bay, but in the center of the bay, there are parts that are more than 200 meters deep, and the area connecting Sakurajima and Kagoshima City is about 40 meters deep, and further into the bay, there are parts that are about 200 meters deep. The center of the bay is sometimes called the South Basin, the inner part the North Basin, and the shallow part the Nishi-Sakurajima Channel. The formation of the bay is said to be due to the Ibusuki (Ata) and Aira calderas. In 1914 (Taisho 3), a large eruption of Sakurajima spewed a large amount of lava, filling the East Sakurajima Channel, which is 400 meters wide and 70 meters deep, connecting Sakurajima to the Osumi Peninsula, and Sakurajima became connected to the mainland. There are ports on the bay, such as Kagoshima, Sakurajima, Tarumizu, Nejime, and Yamakawa, which are connected by ferry boats, and there is also a route from Kagoshima Port to Amami and Okinawa.
