A concept of modern naturalistic theatre. The fourth wall is believed to exist in the space in front of the proscenium stage, and is removed during the performance to allow the audience to see what is happening inside the room. N. Evreinov's play The Fourth Wall (Chetvaerta stena) (1915) is a satire of naturalism in which an actor, infuriated by a director who believes in naturalism and who tries to stage Faust with a fourth wall on stage, drinks real poison, which is also prepared for the play, and dies.
