A commercial and industrial city in the southeastern part of South Dakota, USA. With a population of 109,000 (1994), it is the largest city in the state. The town was founded in 1857 facing the Big Sioux River, and was abandoned for a time due to attacks by Indians. However, the railroad was opened in the 1970s, and the export of Sioux Falls granite for building began. Located in an agricultural and livestock region, the town is home to meat processing, dairy products and other food products, agricultural machinery and other industries, and one of the largest livestock markets in the United States. The city's name comes from the falls on the Big Sioux River. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
