Sioux Falls

Japanese: スー･フォールズ（英語表記）Sioux Falls

A commercial and industrial city in the southeastern part of South Dakota, USA. With a population of 109,000 (1994), it is the largest city in the state. The town was founded in 1857 facing the Big Sioux River, and was abandoned for a time due to attacks by Indians. However, the railroad was opened in the 1970s, and the export of Sioux Falls granite for building began. Located in an agricultural and livestock region, the town is home to meat processing, dairy products and other food products, agricultural machinery and other industries, and one of the largest livestock markets in the United States. The city's name comes from the falls on the Big Sioux River.

アメリカ合衆国サウス･ダコタ州南東部の商工業都市。人口10万9000(1994)で同州最大。1857年にビッグ･スー川に臨んで町が建設され，インディアンの襲撃により一時放棄されたが，70年代に鉄道が開通し，建築用のスー･フォールズ･グラニット(花コウ岩)の移出が始まった。農牧業地帯にあって，食肉加工，酪製品を中心とする食料品，農業機械などの工業，合衆国内有数の牧畜市場が立地する。市名はビッグ･スー川にかかる滝fallsに由来する。
