… The early centers of violin making were Brescia and Cremona, near Milan. The basic shape of the violin was established by A. Amati (Amati) of the Cremonese school and Gasparo da Salò (1540-1609) of the Brescia school, and N. Amati further perfected the current standard violin, which is slightly larger than previous models.
