A perennial plant of the Valeriaceae family that grows in slightly moist grasslands in mountainous regions (illustration). It has a distinctive fragrance and is cultivated for its ornamental and medicinal properties. The root contains 8% essential oil and is called valerian root. In Japan, it is used as a substitute for the European Valeriana root. The essential oil contains various sesquiterpenes and monoterpenes and has a distinctive odor. It is used as a sedative for mental instability and hysteria. However, for medicinal purposes, Valeriana officinalis is superior to the European Valeriana officinalis L. from which the Valeriana root is taken.
