A city on Lake Tanganyika in western Tanzania, in southeastern Africa. It has a population of about 12,000. In the first half of the 19th century, it was established as a stopover point for caravan trade from Zanzibar on the Indian Ocean coast to Congo via Nyamwezi. It is the center of Islam in the inland region, and Swahili culture thrives here. Together with nearby Kigoma, it is a fishing base on Lake Tanganyika. It is known as the place where explorer Stanley met the missing Livingstone in 1871. [Ken Akasaka] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
