A millennialist religious movement that occurred mainly in New Guinea and Melanesia from the 1880s to the present day. It is translated as "cargo worship." In these regions, colonization by Britain, Germany, and other countries began in earnest in the second half of the 19th century. As the colonial system was established, the local people were socially, economically, and politically inferior and oppressed. In this situation, charismatic prophets appeared in various places, predicted that a world of bliss would come through faith in gods, and organized religious movements.
