Sekijo [town] - Sekijo
A former town in Makabe District, western Ibaraki Prefecture. In the early modern period, the town's central Sekimoto prospered through water transport on the Kinu River, which runs along the western border. The town produces rice, pears, tomatoes, chives, and other produce. Pears in particular are famous as a specialty product. Yuki tsumugi silk is also produced here. The site of Seki Castle (historic site) is located here, and the Kanto Railway runs through the eastern part of the town. In March 2005, the town merged with Shimodate City, Makabe District's Akeno Town, and Kyowa Town to become a city, Chikusei City. 34.51 km2 . Population: 16,346 (2003).
