A bird of the Charadriiformes and Charadriidae families (illustration). Total length is about 24 cm. It breeds in the tundra of eastern Siberia and northern North America, and migrates to southern Asia, Australia, South America, etc. in winter. It mainly comes to Japan as a migratory bird, but many winter in the Ogasawara Islands and southern Okinawa. Its beak is short and slightly swollen at the tip. In summer plumage, the upper side of the body is yellowish brown and black spots, the eyes, face, foreneck, chest, and belly are black, and the line connecting the forehead, brows, chest, and sides is white. In winter plumage, the black color from the face to the belly is gone, and the underside has a pale yellowish brown background with blackish brown vertical and horizontal spots. チドリ目チドリ科の鳥(イラスト)。全長約24cm。東シベリアおよび北アメリカ北部のツンドラ帯で繁殖し,冬は南アジア,オーストラリア,南アメリカなどに渡る。日本にはおもに旅鳥として渡来するが,小笠原群島や沖縄南部では越冬するものも多い。くちばしは短くて先が少し膨れている。夏羽は体の上面が黄褐色と黒色の斑で,眼先き,顔,前頸(ぜんけい),胸,腹は黒く,額から眉斑,胸側,脇をつなぐ線は白い。冬羽は顔から腹にかけての黒色がなくなり,下面は淡黄褐色の地に黒褐色の縦斑と横紋がある。
