Insomnia, fear, anxiety, hallucinations, trembling limbs, hypersensitivity, speech disorders, etc. are also observed. Treating this is difficult, and requires hospitalization and isolation, and the patient is gradually withdrawn by using drugs such as continuous sleep or less addictive drugs.

急性中毒は自殺の目的や薬用によって起こり，大量の場合は呼吸麻痺(まひ)で死ぬ。慢性中毒は主として常習性吸煙によるもので，アヘンを渇望し，中止すれば不快な禁断症状を呈し，やめられなくなる。全身やせ細り，皮膚青白く，性欲・食欲も減退し，不眠，恐怖，不安，幻覚，手足の震え，知覚過敏，言語障害等をきたす。治療困難で，入院隔離を要し，持続睡眠や依存性の少ない薬物に代え徐々に離脱させる方法がとられる。
