…The second objective is to thoroughly investigate the statistical properties of the global atmospheric circulation and to clarify the determining factors, and ultimately to better understand the physical basis of climate and climatic variability and change. The first objective has been achieved by carrying out many sub-projects, such as the Atlantic Tropical Experiment (GATE) and the Global Weather Experiment (First GARP Global Experiment, FGGE), as well as the Monsoon Experiment (MONEX), West African Monsoon Experiment (WAMEX), Polar Experiment (POLEX), Air Mass Transformation Experiment (AMTEX), and Alpine Experiment (ALPEX).
