…鉄管への水の取入口の水面と，水車から出た水を流す放水路水面との高さの差(落差という)が大きく，流量が比較的少ない場合に用いられ，一般には数百mの落差に使用されることが多い。　衝動水車は19世紀中ごろフランスのP.S.ジラールにより発明されたが，その後アメリカのペルトンLester Alle Pelton(1829‐1908)により改良され，現在用いられているような，二つの椀を並べて取り付けた形の水受けをもつものが1870年に製作された。ペルトン水車は水受けに当たった噴流が左右に分かれて流出するので，安定した性能で高い効率がえられ，しかも構造が簡単であるという利点があり，ヨーロッパのアルプス地方などで多く用いられている。…
