Samsonov, AV (English spelling) SamsonovAV

…At the start of the war, the German army acted according to the Schlieffen Plan, avoiding a direct breakthrough on the border forts with France and instead planning to violate Belgium's neutrality and rush into France, but the Belgian resistance was unexpectedly strong and they were unable to advance as planned. On the other hand, the Russian army led by Generals Aleksandr V. Samsonov (1859-1914) and Pavel K. Rennenkampf (1854-1918) mobilized quickly, so Chief of the General Staff Moltke quickly appointed P. von Hindenburg and E. Ludendorff, and fought the Battle of Tannenberg in East Prussia for nine days from August 23, 1914, and the German army succeeded in surrounding and annihilating the Russian army. However, the changes made to the Schlieffen Plan, such as transferring some of the divisions that had been deployed on the important right flank of the Western Front to the Eastern Front for the Battle of Tannenberg, had a serious impact on the entire war situation thereafter. In the Battle of the Marne on the Western Front, which began on September 5 and lasted for about a week, the German army was defeated by a counterattack by the French army led by Joseph J.C. Joffre (1852-1931).
