A sodium salt of silicic acid. Various compositions are known. The most common is sodium metasilicate, Na 2 SiO 3. The anhydrate is obtained by eutectic distillation of powdered quartz with sodium carbonate at 1000 °C, and the hydrate is obtained by reacting freshly precipitated silicon dioxide with a calculated amount of sodium hydroxide. The anhydrate is a colorless orthorhombic crystal. Melting point 1088 °C. It dissolves readily in water, and its aqueous solution is hydrolyzed to a strong alkalinity. Various hydrates of Na 2 SiO 3 are obtained from the aqueous solution. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
