Born: 1819/1821.6.14. Bacau, Moldova [Died] August 22, 1890. Mircesci. Romanian playwright and poet. Born into an aristocratic family, he studied in Paris for six years. After returning to Romania, he published poetry and collected Romanian folk songs. He played a central role in the 1848 revolution, and after the defeat of the revolution, he went into exile in Western Europe for a time. He was later appointed director of the National Theatre in Iasi, and published many satirical comedies, contributing to the development of Romanian national theater. He also won the respect of the Romanian people as a patriotic poet for his collection of poems Doine şi lǎcrimioare (1853) (Elegy and Lily of the Valley), his poem Pasteluri (Pastel Paintings) about the Moldova landscape, and other works. He is also famous for his novel Istoria unui galben (44) and his comedy Iaşii în carnaval (52).
