The Great Japanese Language Dictionary

The Great Japanese Language Dictionary

A Japanese dictionary written by Ueda Kazutoshi and Matsui Kanji. 4 volumes of main text and 1 volume of index. The main text was published from 1915 to 1919 (Taisho 4 to 8), the index in 1924 (Showa 4), a revised edition in 1928 to 1929 (Showa 3 to 4), a revised edition (5 volumes) in 1939 (Showa 14), and a condensed edition (one volume) in 1952 (Showa 27). Published by Fuzanbo. Over 200,000 Japanese words, Chinese characters, and foreign words from ancient times to the Taisho period are arranged in alphabetical order according to historical kana spelling, with pronunciations shown using furigana, and a wealth of examples of usage, especially for words from ancient times, the Middle Ages, and early modern times. The definitions are clear, there are few theories on word origins, and medieval words are relatively simple, but as an unprecedentedly excellent Japanese language dictionary, it has enduring value along with the later "Daigenkai" (1932-1937, published by Tomiyama Publishing). It became the basis for the 20 volumes of the "Nihon Kokugo Daijiten" (first edition 1972-1976, published by Shogakukan).
