(1) The simplest chemical formula that shows the atomic composition of a compound. Also called the compositional formula or empirical formula. The percentage of each element obtained by elemental analysis is divided by the atomic weight of each element to obtain the simplest integer ratio (the ratio of the number of atoms of each component element), and this formula is placed after each element symbol. The empirical formulas for both glucose C ₆ H ₁₂ O ₆ and formaldehyde CH ₂ O are CH ₂ O. The molecular formula can be derived from the empirical formula by taking into account the molecular weight.
(2) Although the theoretical basis is unclear, a formula that expresses the relationship between various quantities found through actual measurements is generally called an empirical formula. Care must be taken when using an empirical formula outside the range of actual measurements.

(1) 化合物中の原子の組成を表わす最も簡単な化学式。組成式あるいは経験式ともいう。元素分析によって得られる各元素の百分率をそれぞれの元素の原子量で割って得られる数値 (各成分元素の原子数の割合) を最も簡単な整数比とし，各元素記号のあとにつけた式。ブドウ糖 C₆H₁₂O₆ もホルムアルデヒド CH₂O も実験式で表わすと CH₂O である。分子量を考慮することによって実験式から分子式を導くことができる。
(2) 理論的根拠は明らかでないが，実測によって見出された諸量の間の関係式を一般に実験式という。実験式を実測範囲をはみ出して使うことは注意を要する。
