A shrine located in Taipei City, Taiwan under Japanese rule. It enshrines the three gods Ookunitama, Onamuchi, and Sukunabikona, as well as Prince Kitashirakawa Yoshihisa. Prince Kitashirakawa Yoshihisa, who was a lieutenant general in the army that led the Taiwan expeditionary force after the First Sino-Japanese War, died of illness in Tainan City in 1895. In 1900, it was decided to build Taiwan Shrine, a government-sponsored grand shrine, in Taipei to protect Taiwan, and to enshrine the prince and the same three pioneering gods as Sapporo Shrine (later Hokkaido Shrine). The shrine building was completed in October of the following year, and a ceremony was held to enshrine the shrine. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
