...Indian thinkers called speculation and insight into human existence and the world on which it rests darśana, a noun derived from the verb meaning "to see," and Western and Indian scholars translate it as philosophy. Darśana also includes ānvīkṣikī, philosophical inquiry conducted solely by theoretical speculation and without the authority of scriptures, but Indian thinkers include in darśana the Hindu systems of Buddhism, Jainism, and Vedanta philosophy, which are now called religions.
