… [Hiasa Harueko]
[Obi Folklore]
Obi belts play an important role not only in daily life, but also in life ceremonies and festivals. In addition to the obiwai ceremony in the fifth month of pregnancy, the obi-untying and obi-hajime ceremony at the Shichi-Go-San celebration, and the under-obi-wai ceremony where a loincloth and loincloth are worn at the coming-of-age ceremony, obi belts are also used at marriage ceremonies as a sign of the acquisition of a new status. Obi belts in particular are closely related to marriage, as they are seen as something that ties the soul together. In some regions, men and women would exchange obi belts to announce their engagement, and even today, betrothal money is often given as a payment for the obi belt.
