...A punishment in which the prisoner was tied to the roadside and exposed to the public as an example (migorashi), a humiliating punishment. Under the Shogunate's laws, there were two types of punishment: normal sarashi, in which the prisoner was tied to a post and made to sit on straw mats, and ana-sarashi, in which the prisoner was made to sit on a box buried in the ground with only his head exposed. The former was called oka-sarashi, as opposed to ana-sarashi, and is well known for being imposed on a monk who had committed sexual assault against a woman, and on a man and woman who had attempted double suicide (mutual suicide)....

…It was seen in the Japanese Middle Ages and the early modern period, and in the Edo Shogunate system, it was the maximum punishment applied only to murder. Until the Sengoku period, the head was actually chopped off with a bamboo saw, but the Edo Shogunate law sawing was a formalization of that, and was carried out as a kind of exposure punishment called ana-sarashi. In other words, the criminal was placed in a box buried in the ground, and only the head, shackled, was allowed to emerge from the ground. …
