humaniora

…a name for the classification of academic fields. The term "humanities" for the study of classical literature and philosophy is derived from the Renaissance study of classics and the "humaniora" (study of humanity). In Japan, the term "humanities" refers to all departments in the Faculty of Letters, Faculty of Education, and other fields that do not belong to the natural sciences or social sciences, i.e., philosophy, literature, and history in a broad sense, and is essentially a general term for the cultural sciences excluding most of the social sciences.
