A genre of Chinese comic stories that was popular from the end of the Edo period to the beginning of the Meiji era. Influenced by erotic histories such as Huabo-roku and Hankyo-zakki, which depict the customs of Chinese pleasure quarters, and chikushi, which could be considered a collection of Chinese poetry such as Ichikawa Kansai's Hokuri-ka (1786), this comic story was written in Chinese and sketched various aspects of cities. Nakajima Soin's Oto Shiji Zatsukoto (120 chapters, 1826), which was generally welcomed as a guidebook to Kyoto's famous places, is considered to be the pioneering work, but it was Edo Hanjo-ki (1832-36) by Edo ronin Confucian scholar Terakado Seiken that established the genre known as "hanjo-kimono."
