…The most notable of these was the trend to add color to the exteriors of churches with geometric patterns made of brick and cut stone, as seen in the church of St. Dimitar Solunski in Veliko Tarnovo, built in 1185, and examples of this trend can be seen in many of the churches that remain in Nesebar, which flourished in the 12th to 14th centuries. In painting, a ceramic icon of Theodore from around 900, excavated near Preslav, is unique, but later, in the 12th century, there were other masterpieces of Byzantine painting, such as the frescoes of the Komnenoid period at Bachkovo Monastery, the frescoes of Boyana Church (1259), which show refined portraiture, and the frescoes of the rock-cut church at Ivanovo (14th century), which show dynamic and free brushwork. Under the Ottoman Empire, which lasted for about 500 years from the end of the 15th century, much of the Byzantine art was destroyed, and the traditions were preserved in some western monasteries, such as the Rila Monastery. However, with the exception of the frescoes at the Kremikovci Monastery around 1500, the stylized power of the frescoes was lost, simple decorativeness was added, and icons became more artistic. *Some of the terminology explanations that mention "Ivanovo (Bulgaria)" are listed below.
