[The Maturity of Modern Jazz]
In the late 1950s, black jazz in New York, which had been quiet until then, regained popularity. The modern jazz of black musicians such as Miles Davis, Sonny Rollins, Art Blakey (1919-90, real name Abdullah Ibn Buhaina), and Max Roach, which modified the somewhat chaotic bop idiom in terms of group expression within a combo format and focused on improvisation (similar to ad-lib), was called "hard bop." Its powerful and direct expression overwhelmed the experimental jazz of white players on the West Coast, which tended to fuse with modern music. Around this time, black leaders in Africa started to gain independence one after another, and in the United States, the movement to abolish racial discrimination against blacks, such as the issue of coeducational schools for whites and blacks, the bus boycott movement, and the civil rights movement, became stronger.

　1950年代後半にいたり，それまで鳴りをひそめていたニューヨークの黒人ジャズが人気を盛り返した。グループ表現という点ではやや無秩序だったバップ･イディオムを，コンボ形式の中で修正し，しかもインプロビゼーションimprovisation(即興演奏，アドリブと同意)を主体としたマイルス･デービス，ソニー･ロリンズ(T.ロリンズ)，アート･ブレーキーArt Blakey(1919‐90，本名Abdullah Ibn Buhaina)，マックス･ローチら黒人によるモダン･ジャズは，〈ハード･バップhard bop〉と呼ばれ，その力強く直截な表現は，ウェスト･コーストの白人プレーヤーによる，近代音楽との融合に傾いた実験的なジャズを圧倒する勢いをみせた。このころからアフリカでは黒人指導者たちによる独立が相次ぎ，アメリカ国内にあっては白人･黒人の共学問題，バス･ボイコット運動，公民権獲得運動など黒人差別撤廃の動きが大きくなった。…
