Date of birth and death unknown. An Indian Buddhist monk from around the 3rd century BC. Mahinda is his Pali name, Mahendra in Sanskrit. It is translated into Chinese as Mahinda. He was born near Ujjeni in western India as a prince of King Ashoka of the Maurya Dynasty, who ruled India based on Buddhist thought. He became a monk and studied under Moggaliputta Tissa, who presided over the Third Assumption under King Ashoka. Later, at the command of his father, he went to Ceylon (Sri Lanka) and spread Buddhism. He built a Mahavihara (great temple) in the capital Anuradhapura, and created the foundation of Buddhism in Ceylon. His sister Sanghamitta also became a nun and went to Ceylon to help her brother and work to spread Buddhism.

生没年不詳。紀元前3世紀ころのインドの仏教僧。マヒンダはパーリ語名で、サンスクリット語ではマヘーンドラMahendra。摩呬陀(まひんだ)と漢訳される。仏教思想に基づいてインドを統治したマウリヤ王朝アショカ王の王子として西インドのウッジェーニー付近で生まれる。アショカ王のもとで第3回結集(けつじゅう)を主宰したモッガリプッタ・ティッサMoggaliputta Tissaに就いて出家し、学を修めた。のち父王の命令でセイロン島(スリランカ)に赴き、仏教を広めた。首都アヌラダプーラにマハービハーラ(大寺)を建立し、セイロン仏教の基盤をつくった。妹サンガーミッターSanghamittaも比丘尼(びくに)となり、セイロンに行き兄を助け、仏教伝道に努めた。
