Quiet seat - Kanin no Seki

Japanese:
Quiet seat - Kanin no Seki

This tea room is built into a shoin study behind the main hall of Jukoin, a subtemple of Daitokuji Temple in Kyoto. In the written records of the monk Dairyu of Gyokurin-in, there is an entry that reads, "In the first year of the Kanpo era, the year of the Rooster, to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the death of Jukoin's Rikyu, Sen Sozaro donated a tea room to Jukoin, and we were asked to hold a morning tea ceremony." This is known to be the case when Joshinsai (the 7th head of the Omotesenke school) donated a "tea room" to Jukoin in 1741 (Kanpo 1). This tea room is the retreat seat. The room has three tatami mats, and the hearth has a raised daimegiri and a central pillar. The central pillar is made of straight red pine with bark and a cross beam, allowing an open ceiling at the bottom. The interior is simple, with the combination of materials showing the simplicity typical of Rikyu. There are only two windows, a bokuseki window and a renji window above the nijiriguchi, creating a tight space with subdued light.
