A biennial herb of the legume family used as pasture. It is also called subterranean clover. Subterranean means "underground," and refers to the fact that the plant produces seeds underground after flowering. Native to the Mediterranean coastal region. Currently cultivated in Australia and New Zealand. The stems grow along the ground and reach a length of about 60 cm. The leaves are alternate, with petioles over 10 cm long. The three leaflets are heart-shaped with concave tips. In spring, flower stalks grow from the base of the leaves, and several white sexual flowers bloom in clusters at the end of the stalks.
