Thaton (English spelling)

A city in Mon State in southeastern Myanmar. It is the administrative center of Thaton Township. It is located 60 km north-northwest of Mawlamyine and 16 km inland from the eastern coast of Mouttama Bay. It was once a seaport and a center for the Mon (Talain) people. It prospered as the capital of the Talain Kingdom they established until it was destroyed by the Bagan Dynasty (1057). It was also a center of Hindu Buddhism. It is a densely populated commercial center on the coastal plain, connected to Bago and Mawlamyine by railway. Population 140,846 (1983).
