Azesuge - Azesuge

Japanese:
Azesuge - Azesuge

A perennial plant of the Cyperaceae family (APG classification: Cyperaceae). It grows slender underground runners and is 20-60 cm tall. The leaves are soft and 2-4 mm wide. The female spikelets are cylindrical and erect, 2-5 cm long. The scales of the female flowers are black-brown and very conspicuous. They grow in clusters in wetlands, riverbanks, and ridges on flat land, and flower in May-June. The leaves are used for ropes and other items. They are distributed in Hokkaido, Honshu, Karafuto (Sakhalin), and the Kuril Islands, but there is a large variation. A variety that grows in the marshes of Hokkaido and does not grow runners is distinguished as Carex o-Azesugesu. Because they no longer grow runners, they grow into large plants that rise up like small hills, creating what is called yachibozu.
