An old town in Asakura County in the central-southern part of Fukuoka Prefecture. It is on the right bank of the midstream Chikugo River and borders Oita Prefecture. The Oita Expressway passes through the town. The main settlement developed as a post town on the road connecting Fukuoka and Hita. It produces rice, grapes, pears, and persimmons, and manufactures woodwork and bamboo products. It is home to Harazuru Hot Springs. In March 2006, it merged with Amagi City and Asakura Town, Asakura County, to become a city, Asakura City. 44.98 km2 . Population: 8,839 (2003). 福岡県中南部,朝倉郡の旧町。筑後川中流右岸にあり,大分県に接する。大分自動車道が通じる。主集落は福岡・日田を結ぶ街道の宿場町として発達。米,ブドウ,ナシ,カキを産し,木工品,竹製品を製造。原鶴(はらづる)温泉がある。2006年3月,甘木市,朝倉郡朝倉町と合併し市制,朝倉市となる。44.98km2。8839人(2003)。
