Beginning of Autumn

Japanese:
Beginning of Autumn
One of the twenty-four divisions. It is believed that the beginning of autumn is the beginning of the autumn season. It is the seventh month of the lunisolar calendar (first half of July), which begins on the day when the sun's ecliptic longitude reaches 135° (August 7th or 8th in the solar calendar) and lasts for 15 days until the day before the beginning of the heat (August 23rd or 24th, when the sun's ecliptic longitude is 150°). In the modern calendar, it refers to the first day of this period. When the heat passes its peak and the beginning of autumn is heard, the season suddenly becomes cool. In ancient China, this period was further divided into three periods (cool breeze arrives, white dew falls, and cold cicadas sing) with each period lasting five days. This means the period when autumn breezes blow, dew forms on the grass leaves, and higurashi (cold cicadas) sing.
